Send your follow-up emails before you go to sleep, no matter what

23 February, 2008 (23:46) | business, lifehacking | By: bpm140

In Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferrazzi writes that you should send a follow-up email the same day you meet someone. Not within 24 hours… the same day. His reasons are varied, but mine is singular: if I don’t send the emails before I go to bed, it’s unlikely that I’ll ever get them done.

For example, Monday though Wednesday I emailed every person I met at GDC. Thursday I didn’t have the juice in my tank and didn’t follow up with anyone at the Alpha / Bessemer dinner. And I still haven’t.

Tap the energy reserves and get it done.

Kwiry rocks my socks

23 February, 2008 (17:37) | praise, web2.0 | By: bpm140

Chris Charla turned me onto a cool little service at GDC called Kwiry that helps you remember all the cool little things you come across in your daily life.

  1. Learn about something interesting, like a book, band, place, person, whatever
  2. Send an SMS to KWIRY with the thing you want to remember
  3. Receive a reminder email with a link to a google search for said thing

Dead simple. Dead useful. I’m in love.

AppleTV requires too many hops to a central fileshare

Out of sync

23 February, 2008 (12:03) | health | By: bpm140

Part One: I’ve lost my voice from the conference. First time that’s ever happened. What’s really weird is that even on IM my first thought is to use emoticons instead of words. The brain is funny.

Part Two: I finally figured out why driving home late at night on Fell bugs me. The lights are timed so that you’ll always get a green light if you drive 25 miles an hour. The posted speed limit is 30.

GDC means very few posts this week

19 February, 2008 (13:52) | games, marcoullier.com | By: bpm140

I love GDC, not for the conference but for the people. It’s the one time a year that I hang with my old peeps and discuss how fucked is the games industry. It’s not a “yes or no” question, but rather a “just *how* much” question.

I made a deal with Jen — I can go out every night in exchange for watching Royse in the mornings. As a result, I’m unlikely to have much time to post. I have heard about some cool new stuff, and if I get a chance I’ll post them for ya. Maybe some photos?

Ugly is starting to look pretty good

Dammit! I somehow broke access to my permalinks a few days ago when I changed to a more verbose naming structure. Apparently I had to muck about with my .htaccess file. Yeah, that’s intuitive. I’m starting to think Bijan has it right.

Anyway, the permalinks are working once again. Surf with impunity.

Social Games Party Monday night @ GDC

17 February, 2008 (11:06) | games, socnets | By: bpm140

I’m doing some work with Zynga Games, helping them throw a developer bash Monday night as Jillian’s in the Metro, across from Moscone West, from 5:30 to 8:30pm. If you’re interested in casual, indie or social games, you’ll want to stop by.

The value of managing expectations

15 February, 2008 (17:29) | customer service, praise | By: bpm140

She can't take any more, kiptain!I finally ordered Moo Cards a few days back. The order confirmation said the cards would like ship in about five days. I thought this was a reasonable time frame. Thirty-six hours later I was notified that the cards were shipping.

What an easy way to delight your customers. Under-promise and over-deliver. Just keep in mind that if the delta is too great, you’ll lose their trust moving forward.
