Weezer’s new video makes me happy

“Meta” jokes only delight people with obscene amounts of domain knowledge. That’s why mashups are the domain of music snobs — the more context you build around individual songs, the more excitement when they merge.

(I still can’t get embed to work in this template. I fucking hate CSS.)

This video could have been a trainwreck, a “Yeah, Rivers, I like YouTube too” moment. Instead, when Chris Crocker starts lip syncing one minute in (followed by the Numa Numa kid and Tay Zonday) the video becomes a celebration of the people involved and the “fuck yeah!” area of my brain lights up.I imagine the last scene is what ROFLCon looked like this year.

From the “nobody really ever gets what they want” department

Rosneft petrol station, MoscowImage via WikipediaThe RIAA has proclaimed victory over Russian MP3 service AllOfMP3.com, declaring that the site is “defunct and out of business,” while turning a blind eye to MP3Sparks.com, the parallel service that sprung up days after Russian authorities were forced to shut down AllOfMP3.

Is this win/win or lose/lose?

  • The RIAA shut down one popular service and a dozen others sprouted in its place.
  • The site continues doing business, although in a neutered fashion – most US services won’t submit payments to the site.
  • Consumer still get cheap MP3s, but it’s a pain without the wonderful AllOfMP3 downloading app.

Iteration will save the music industry

Trent Reznor told his record company off last year. Six weeks later, he released a collaboration with Saul Williams online, allowing people to download it for free and asking them to pay $5 if they liked it. He was disappointed with the results. Yet today the new NIN album is online, available for free, along with a variety of other options.

One wonders if we online entrepreneurs suffer a lack of hubris (sure we’ll fail, but whatever) or an excess (I’ll ultimately get it right). Either way, I’m excited to see the experiments that Trent and others roll out next.

Lazyweb request: help a brotha with podcast viewing

I’ll leave for another post my fervent belief that Apple is now first and foremost “The iTunes Company”. I’ll settle for figuring out how to suck the pod- and videocast teat from several sources in my life.

I have an iPod that I sync to my Macbook. The Macbook is only on when I’m using it. I also have a Mac Mini in the loving room and AppleTVs in the bedroom and home theater. I want to download a podcast once and play it on any of the five devices. This doesn’t seem even remotely possible. What am I missing?

The living rooms of German DJs

You ever look at evidence of a life completely foreign to your own and think “man, it might be cool to wear those shoes for a while”?

Man, it would be so cool to wear these shoes for a while. (I especially love the three framed Bowie prints in the one living room.)

Dirrrty mixes – not safe for work, or your booty

29 January, 2008 (15:19) | mixtapes, music | By: bpm140

Recently bought a new iPod and can once again listen to mixes in my car. These are two of my favorites, and while they differ in style, they share the fact that they can’t be played near the kids.

Elektric Cowboy puts together a straight-ahead crunchy dance mix. It starts out a bit weak, but gets hot by track two. The Blondie and PIL mashups really shine.

Dopplebanger mixes a supermellow package, mashing Gooom artists like M83 and Villeneuve with hip hop acts like Missy E and Eminem. Reminds me of the Kleptones’ “Yoshimi Battles The Hip-Hop Robots“.

Download and tracklisting are included on the permalink, streaming mp3 is embedded below.

Going to see the Foo Fighters Feb 2 in Oakland — wanna come with, FOR FREE!?!

27 January, 2008 (13:32) | concerts, music | By: bpm140

It’s been years since I’ve seen a stadium show, but I decided to break my “no venue larger than 2,500 people” rule for the Foos. I bought four floor tickets for my birthday and am planning on hitting the Oakland Arena early in order to get close to the stage.

Send me an email if you want to come.

U23D. Wow. Just… Wow!

22 January, 2008 (13:27) | movies, music | By: bpm140

I was privileged to attend a press screening of U23D at the Metreon today. It’s been getting killer buzz for a reason. My thoughts:

  • 3D movies are ready for primetime.
  • 3D + Imax = Hugely impressive.
  • Give Bono the Nobel Peace Prize already!
  • The Edge is one hell of a guitarist. His Bullet the Blue Sky solo was awesome.
  • Learning the bass means staring at Adam Clayton whenever he’s onscreen.
  • Poor Larry Mullen Jr. isn’t aging so well.
  • Makes me believe again that music can change the world.
